I've lately been spending my time, probably too much time at a website called Daily Awards It's a web site where photographers upload their images and score other photographer's work. The scoring from other photographers with their comments can be brutal if not enlightening. My cigarette butts, a controversial subject, have been scored from the very lowest to the medium. Those images have received comments such as "lacking interest," and "distasteful." If you've followed my blog and my presence at other sights you should know I have responded. Someone commented that if their shot of flies mating got a four out of ten, my cigarette butts deserved a three! They're a tough audience. Quite often I have used Irving Penn as a example of not necessarily photographing the beautiful, the sexy, but also photographing obese nudes and cigarette butts. One private reply from that I got was who was Irving Penn? When I was learning photography photo history and the work from the great photographers played a very big role in my education. This would appear has fallen to the wayside. My automotive images also don't score to well on that site. What does do well are the cute portraits and animal photographs. The wildlife life photographers consistently give my studio shots a middle score. My best scored shots are the sculler, the black mikasa, and the winde bottle with glass. Unfortunately I gave a low score to a way too busy, badly exposed image. From then on the owner of that shot gave me scores at least 2 points below my running average. When I commented on one shot was out of focus, the owner of that shot gave me the same comment on several of my images! I try not to look at who did the image before scoring. Don't get me wrong there is some really nice work there and I'm enjoying myself. Go to the site and check it out, become a member, upload some images and play the game.
